Texas Food

I really only snapped images of the memorable items, which was basically after the conference.  They did a pretty decent job of feeding us at the convention center, but there was a lot of bread and salad.  Once my brother and aunt came into town, we had a car and that made navigation easier! They were kind enough to go to two veg only joints, but the rest of the time it was omni places or at my aunt and uncle's house.

Soy Chorizo Breakfast Taco
Vegan chocolate dipped, peanut butter drizzle and peanuts from Bananarchy.

(My thanks to brother for holding said banana whilst being photographed.)

Hippie Burger and fries from Kerbey Lane

Cuban Black Beans & Rice from small town Texas

Unpictured, but for your interest (from the omni restaurants): oatmeal from The Magnolia Cafe
Southwest Salad (without cheese) from Cedar Door  ,  Vegetable Fajita Tacos from Micheladas

I purchased a few items from the prepared section at Whole Foods to have with me at their house, most of which you have seen here previously.  We did make tacos one night, so I had avocado ones.

Similar to my VA trip, I want to go back to Austin when not there for work or a family visit (obviously, I would work in a couple of nights with them, but not five), just so I can explore the city a little more.  I had a great time, my aunt and uncle were so generous and welcoming - gotta love that southern hospitality - but I'm ready to be eating more normally!  And no more heat, woo hoo! Two weeks of summer break left...

More Texas

Yup, still here!  I head home tomorrow, and will do Thursday's post focused only on the food of my adventure.  After three days of the conference, I met up with my brother and Aunt & Uncle's family.  We headed out to central Texas for three days.  Today and half of tomorrow are back here in Austin.

A few more from Austin....

Central Texas....

See you on Thursday! It has been great, but I'm ready to not be in this oppressive heat!  Ha!

Summer Highlights #6

Greetings from Austin, Texas! The previously mentioned conference has been held here the past week, and the organization that sent my colleague and I here did not short us on the accommodations.  Here are a few images from the last few days... (P.S. This is being posted from my iPad, let me know if you can't see the pictures!)

It's about 100 degrees and humid outside, and about 65 degrees inside most places.  Ha!

Rosenberg's Bagels & Delicatessan

A few months ago, a friend made me aware of an authentic New York bagel shop in her neighborhood.  I finally got around to checking out their website and once I saw "tofu cream cheese" and "bialy", I made up my mind to visit immediately!

They carry only one variety of bialy at a time, and today's flavor was onion. I realized this only after ordering my onion bagel.  I ate the bialy at lunch with a spinach salad, very good!
Onion bagel with tofu cream cheese and a small coffee, to go.  All three items: $8.68
I was a little disappointed in the thin and runny texture of the tofu cream cheese (I had to eat it over the sink, and wipe my chin).
But the bagel was delicious, and would warrant me picking some up and using Tofutti at home.  Yum!

Tastes Good

Today was a day of great taste.  Sleeping in, general relaxation, with very few chores.  All of this is very well, as I will spend the next three days at a conference for work.  I guess I have to think about the upcoming school year at some point!  I have a post scheduled for your enjoyment on Thursday, so you won't have to read about English Literature & Composition.
Fruit for breakfast.  Leftovers for lunch: Kung Pao Tofu & Vegetables from Little Ollie's (I met a friend there yesterday).
Dinner of stuffed grape leaves and watermelon.

 Ah, summer.  Stay, don't leave!

Summer Highlights #5

This week consisted mostly of yoga, Grandma, and dogs.  Here are a few images for your viewing:
Neighbor dog Frankie did not appreciate Remy snuggling him, while he was napping under the blanket.
(Four out of the five days, Remy was playing with Grandma's dog or Frankie. He loved this week.)

Lunch with Grandma #1: Tokyo Joe's Tofu Teriyaki Bowl. Yum.
Lunch with Grandma #2 Whole Foods Hot Bar: Pea & Tofu Curry over brown rice. Good.
Spinach, two plums, frozen pineapple, half of a frozen banana, water.

My cousin and her husband (as well as 8 month old daughter & 3 year old Labradoodle) are moving back to Denver from Boston.  I made them a "Welcome Back" basket with farmer's market produce, Colorado coffee, and fresh bread.  I also made a list of great local shops, restaurants, and my favorites (i.e. Remy's groomer) to help them get re-acquainted with everything (they haven't lived here since 1999!).
Grandma (and her little dog, too!) return to the Land of Oz tomorrow, so I'll be spending a little more time with the family this evening.  See you on Tuesday!

Please Stand By

I had my pictures ready, even took all of them on my DSLR as opposed to my phone.  But alas, I write this to you from my phone.  I had to do a partial re-imaging (wiped everything but files and photos) on my laptop this afternoon, as it was blinking between the home screen and desktop (Windows 8).  All of the forums I read said this was the only fix, and it does work now.  However, I have to reinstall all if the apps and programs, as they were removed.  I'm in the process of installing my camera software, but will finish it in the morning.  I have a healthy collection of weekly highlights that I will share this weekend! See you soon!

Quiet Tuesday

The days started a little late, as I slept in and took to some tasks before making it to breakfast late morning.

I picked up a little Whole Foods Veggie Sushi to take with me to my parents house, where I spent the rest of midday and the afternoon with Grandma.  She was in a good mood, so we had a nice time chatting and walking the dogs.

Summertime dinner back at my house:

See you on Thursday!

Summer Highlights #4

There were yoga classes, a CycleHIIT class, lots of time with friends and family.  The HVAC work continues for my neighbors (my furnace was finished being installed on Tuesday, and with it the restoration of air conditioning!!), and they are using the company I contracted.  As a "thank you" for coordinating this, Frankie's Mommy gifted me movie tickets.  I used them with a friend to see "Magic Mike XXL". It was silly, not a great story line, but entertaining visually. Ha!
I didn't remember to take many photos of my meals, but here is a breakfast that happened a few times:
As mentioned earlier in the week, we had a lot of smoke from the Western Canada fires.  It was worst on Tuesday and Wednesday.  There are a few clouds in the picture, but here is shot looking west.  40% of that horizon should be mountains! So much smoke!
I didn't purchase it, but now I know it exists, and where to find it.  Who knew Daiya made Cheezy Mac?!
On Friday, I visited a friend in Fort Collins.  We shopped around main street, and spent some time in this store which had about a million garden gnomes.  I still didn't purchase any, as I don't know what I want to do.

More activities to come this week, and I'll be sure to capture more!  Only five weeks of summer left, and I want to slow down time!  See you Tuesday...

Beet Box Denver

Seeing as I haven't made in to another restaurant on my summer list, I thought I would do a proper brick and mortar post of Beet Box.
(Pardon the reflection of the florescent bulbs on the case photos.  I couldn't be picky, I was most definitely being watched.)

I went with my usual, and brought them home:
Above: Beet Brownie.  Below: Turtle Brownie.

I wanted to take more pictures on the inside, especially of the seating area but it was quite full for a Thursday at 4:30pm.

See you this weekend for my weekly wrap up post!

Soggy Tuesday

Breakfast of cloudy, rainy, hazy mornings: pb toast, melon, coffee.

When my mother and brother returned from Kansas, they brought my grandmother with them.  She's still grieving, and we hope to cheer her/ love her/ distract her for the next few weeks.  I hung out with her today, and brought my TJ's Super Spinach Salad for lunch.

I picked up this delicious agua fresca (and a few other items):
Water, blackberries, blueberries, cantaloupe, honeydew, kiwi, mango, pineapple, strawberry, and watermelon. YES. Basically, drinking candy.

By dinnertime, the rain had stopped but I kept coughing every time I went outside.  Lo and behold, the "haze" I was seeing all day (you can't even see the mountains!) was smoke.  From Canada forest fires.   Just another reminder that this is a tiny planet.

Veggie dog and oven fries.

See you on Thursday!

Summer Highlights #3

It was a tough week, thus the lack of posts.  It was hot outside and inside the house, as I still don't have a working furnace/a.c. (the former talks to the latter - so without the furnace fan, I have no central air).  Wednesday night, I enjoyed my first warm shower in seven days, so at least there is a new hot water heater!  My furnace was supposed to be finished with installation on Friday, but... it's not.

After feeling like a prisoner in my own hot house (read: waiting for repairman, bids, "sometime between 8-12, or 2-5pm" yuckiness), I found my life again on Thursday and resumed making plans, and attending workout classes.

Below are the few highlights of the week, starting with a trip to a garden store.  I've been told I need gnomes for my gnome door, and this first one aptly captured my cantankerous mood:
 Gentler versions:
None were purchased.  Hot house = no sleeping = cranky all of the time.  I found respite at my parents house on three hot afternoons, just to take a break.  Here is Terra, using her water bowl as a chin rest. (Remy also appreciated the break from my mid 80s degree house.)
Whilst at my house, I have only cold food.  Lots of smoothies.
Per Shen/ViVi/STVegan, I decided to have a Beast Burger for my holiday BBQ meal.  I think it was overcooked, as it was hard and tasteless.  I'll see what the next preparation holds.
A couple of times this past week, I went to Whole Foods for a/c and cold meals.
No 4th of July plans for me (had a cookout with the family earlier in the week), as I was supposed to be in Kansas for harvest.  However, I couldn't leave as my new furnace was going to be installed on Friday.  Which it wasn't.  Cue crankiness.

I'll see you on Tuesday, with unicorns and rainbows.  And hopefully, air conditioning.
