The Swing

Today's high: 52 degrees, with showers.

Vega Vanilla (the last of it!), frozen banana, frozen mango, water = frozen me.

Lunchbox: snap peas, carrots, falafel, garlic hummus.

I wanted hot chocolate, but my cupboard hasn't had that in a while. So, a pb rice cake instead.

I knew that today was going to be chilly, so I've kombu broth brewing in the fridge.
A nice steamy bowl of homemade miso soup. Truth be told, I wanted pho, but my pho friend had a date. (She said she'd rather have pho than go on this date, so we'll go sometime soon. Ha!)  I think it's time for hot meals, all the time.  Farewell, smoothies - see you in the spring...

  1. I've never made kombu broth, but it looks like a lovely base to miso soup. Have you made pho? I've love to try it sometime!

    1. Kombu broth is so easy! Here's a link: http://www.justonecookbook.com/recipes/how-to-make-kombu-dashi-vegetarian-dashi/

Pho on the hard, is pho-ken hard to make. ;) I've yet to be successful.

  2. I got into raw foods really late this summer, so maybe yr cooler food will extend into the winter... Although I've heard it's gonna be a pretty chilly one. We shall see.
The miso soup looks great. I've been meaning to make some, but have been busy lately. Not that it's a super intense dish! Cute lunch too. I've been packing carrot sticks a lot these days. Snap peas are a great choice too.

    1. I want to make Sarah's raw pad thai, so they might sneak in here and there!

You make the best miso soup, I need to make a Maud version packed with veggies, soon!

  3. Its just cool enough in the mornings i want hot coffee again not iced, and smoothies aren't as appealing. I love snap peas! They are the perfect snackable veggie- although annoying when they have strings yet were labeled stringless....
The kombu miso broth sounds wonderful!

    1. I'm all about the hot coffee! I have just a little bit of iced coffee (pre-made) in the fridge, but haven't brought myself to finish it off.

I'm with you on the strings in our peas - I find that I break off the ends most of the time.

It's pieces of kombu in water, left in the fridge - I later add a spoonful of miso paste, after I have boiled a serving of the broth. That's it! I should look for a vegan dashi spice blend to really amp up the flavor...

  4. Wow, that's quite the temperature shift! I don't blame you for going back to warm foods and I can't wait to see what yummy warm meals you have planned for the coming weeks.

These meals look lovely, especially that miso soup! I hope you get your pho soon so I can be jealous of it ;) It's been cooling off a bit here too but oddly enough I've been having random cravings for smoothies! I eat oatmeal on the hot days and drink smoothies on the cooler days. So backwards, ha!

    1. I don't even want cereal! I think you can expect toast or waffles during the weekday mornings. I've had to turn on the heat already, as yesterday morning it was 63 degrees in my house.

Ha ha! Sometimes our internal desires do not reflect the external temperatures! I hope to make it to pho soon, too!

  5. High of 52?! That is distrubing. A comforting soup was in order.

    1. And yesterday was 54! We're headed towards the 70s now, so that cold air can head east - get ready! ;)

  6. We had the same weather today! Although, I don't think it quite got into the 50's. You definitely had the perfect food day for a cold, rainy day. I could go for some hot chocolate, too. The miso soup looks gorgeous!

    1. I foresee a lot of soup and hot meal in the future - hopefully some hot chocolate, too! I need to find a recipe for homemade or a vegan pre-made version...
