A Native Foods Halloween

Teaser: After opening on Tuesday, I made it to the newest Native Foods Cafe in Denver for dinner!

But, back to the day: a sticky peanut butter oatmeal
Lunch: Spaghetti Squash with cashew cream, steamed kale with hot sauce
Gentle Vinyasa followed by a stop at Native Foods!
I chose the Thursday Special: Classic Deli Reuben with a side of fries.
The Reuben Seitan really is a thing of wonder, between the horseradish cheez, homemade sauerkraut, and russian dressing. . .holy delicious. And the shoestring fries were fresh and light.

Shen, you would enjoy this tremendously.

One of the managers chatted me up while I waited for my meal to-go, and talked about how they don't use advertising, but word of mouth for business promotion.  I plan to return this weekend for one of their gorgeous salads!

It's All in Your Head

Rarely has there been a decent oatmeal photo, and this morning was no exception:
"Pumpkin Pie Oatmeal" : pumpkin puree, molasses, maple syrup, and cinnamon mixed in with the oats.

Lunch: Peas, carrots, soy crumbles, brown rice mixed with tomato sauce and spices - stuffed into a bell pepper. And an organic gala apple.

After work and before yoga, I polished off the Hatch Chile Cashews.

Dinner: steamed kale with Happy Herbivore's Miso Gravy and potato wedges.

I'm the type of person who can spend too much time in my head, mulling over issues (real and fictitious), over-thinking my life, and creating my own anxiety.  I discovered in tonight's Yin Yoga class,  the struggle would not be remaining in each position for 3-5 minutes, but rather quieting my hyperactive head. It's really hard.  Living in the moment is definitely my weakness.  I'm always in such a hurry to anticipate the next move / release / potential crisis - and the only person applying that pressure on me, is myself.   My goal is to become a little more present each day, and remember to step outside of my head with more frequency.

I hope your week is a beautifully reflective one, and I'll see you on Thursday.

Restaurants & Workouts

Today for lunch, I ventured to the home of Chipotle; the very first store which was conceived and opened in Denver in 1993.
So small, it has four parking spots and the smallest square footage of any other Chipotle I've ever visited.  Teeny tiny.  As in the picture below shows, notice "the counter" wherein you ask and pay at the same time. No big menu boards, no line to pass down your meal - one spot.  And the dining room could hold maybe 15 people.

Luckily, it all tastes the same. By the way, has anyone tried the Sofritas (marinated tofu) in a meal? I tried a sample, and thought it was okay.  I went with my usual veggie bowl.  Extra lettuce.
Speaking of restaurants, Native Foods opens on Tuesday.  Eeeek! I plan to get there this week. Not really a restaurant, but it carries food: Trader Joe's, the opening day is now in 2014.

Workouts for this week:
Sunday: YogaCycle (completed)
Monday: Align & Flow
Tuesday: Yin
Wednesday: RideTRX (waitlisted, again!)
Thursday: Gentle Vinyasa
Friday: Rest
Saturday: YogaCycle

As you can see, I'm light on cardio and heavy on yoga this week.  I hope to get in a few long walks with Remy to get the blood really pumping (although Monday's yoga is pretty tough, the rest of it will not be).

A Delicious Day

The end of the Quaker Oat Squares, served with almond milk.
I ended up with a spare moment, and ran out to Whole Foods to pick up lunch (otherwise, it would have been crackers & carrots with hummus, and an apple).
Bhakti Chai and Avocado & Cucumber Sushi.

It had been too long since I had chocolate, so I bought a mini-bar:
With that tasty lunch and decadent snack, I didn't need anything before heading to the best Gentle Vinyasa I've had in a while.  I surprised myself when I was able to do downward facing dog with flat feet - not on my toes!! Hooray!

Steamed broccoli and kale, covered in Miso Gravy from Everyday Happy Herbivore and potato wedges.
It's almost the weekend, we're nearly there! Woo hoo!

Rest Day

Last night during yoga class, my body said "take tomorrow off" and so, I am.  What I really want to do is sleep for two days, ha ha! Tomorrow I'm back on the horse, and off the waiting list - I'll be taking the RideTRX class and giving it my best.  But for today, I rest.

Beige But Better

Pumpkin Pie Smoothie before YogaCycle class.
Hatch Green Chile Cashews (not pictured) after class, and a Honeycrisp
After cleaning at the studio, I picked up an onion bagel.  Toasted and then added Tofutti.
Busy, but not particularly productive afternoon including getting caught in the rain.  I felt inspired to have another Bombay Bowl, not even five days after my last one. Ha ha!
However, the workers cheered when I walked in because no one else was in there (it was six o'clock - not an unusual time for dinner!), and the gal who made my bowl said they plan to keep the Sweet Korma - but definitely off menu (some customers have said it's not a true representation of a Korma).

While greens were missing from today's menu, my workout set up for the week is much better than the previous week!

Sunday: YogaCycle
Monday: Align & Flow (yes, I'm not as advanced as I really need to be for this class - pushing myself anyway!)
Tuesday: Ride HIIT
Wednesday: RideTRX (waitlisted, so this might end up a rest day)
Thursday: Gentle Vinyasa
Friday: Rest
Saturday: YogaCycle

Saturday Activities

I realized last weekend that the Saturday Farmer's Market was still going - until the end of October.  I decided to support these 40-degree-weathering Coloradoans with a few of my dollars.

Some people were still selling tomatoes. Crazy! I picked up these bell peppers (for stuffed peppers) and my first spaghetti squash of the season (to which I will add cashew cream!).

Speaking of cashews, while at Whole Foods today I saw these:
Thus in addition to dry, unsalted cashews  - a half scoop:
Just a little kick, not too spicy.

Lastly, I met up with some friends and brought this to the gathering:
Original and Hot & Spicy Falafels, traditional hummus.  I actually only had one, as I was too busy socializing.  Someone else brought homemade bean dip and fresh tortilla chips, of which I had a healthy amount. Ha!

I hope your weekend is going well! See you on Sunday!

Tired But Satisfied

Oatmeal Squares cereal with almond milk:
Home for lunch with Remy: I picked up a Sweet Korma Tofu Bowl
Dinner: Steamed broccoli & kale and oddly chopped potato slices (oven baked)
The Happy Herbivore Miso Gravy gets its own sentence. Amaze-balls.

While dinner was in the oven / on the stove, I did a little restorative yoga. That was also amaze-balls.

A Different Week

All weekends should be three days long, yes? Honestly, I'm not any further ahead than a two day weekend but I've enjoyed the opportunity to take care of a few more errands and still have time to see people.  Tomorrow our students have yet another day off while the faculty attends a conference.  Wednesday and Thursday are going to be super long (13 hour work days!) due to parent/teacher conferences after school, which means I'll come home during lunch to see Remy, as will my neighbor during other pockets of time throughout the day.  Some of these days will have meals catered, so I don't know what I'll be eating.  I went a little light on groceries this week (still more in the cupboard and freezer anyway!), seeing as my meals at home might be limited (minus what I bring for lunch).

Due to this different schedule, and again spending Sunday with family, my workouts will be sporadic.

Monday: YogaCycle (completed!)
Tuesday: Ride Interval and Yin Yoga (yes, two classes - back to back!)
Wednesday: long day at work
Thursday: long day at work
Friday: Vodka exhausted
Saturday: YogaCycle

During the days without a class, I do plan on slipping in some yoga when I get home from work. Wish me luck!

The Redemption Hike

I don't even need to link back to July's difficult hike, because I know you remember the one of which I speak.  My brother, two canines, and I returned to the scene yesterday.  However, we did the two and a half mile moderate hike that was originally planned on that fateful day.

It's straight up to the summit, thus obviously all downhill when you double back.

We're about two weeks late for the Aspen tree colors, but it was a nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon.  It was a bit chilly, in the upper 40s, but still enjoyable.

Tomorrow I have the day off (no, not to celebrate Columbus - just a coincidence that the district gave us the day), so I"ll be back then to talk weekly workouts and food!  Enjoy your Sunday!

On the Heels of Friday

Chocolate Brown Rice Protein - Frozen Banana - Almond Milk Smoothie
Kale Potato Salad with Tofutti  Better Than Cream Cheese and Italian Seasoning
Note: it's not nearly as good when refrigerated - best served warm.

Pre-yoga snack:

Dinner:
With peanut sauce and Sriracha, of course.

It's cool and raining this evening, and I wish I had some hot chocolate.  Instead, there will be decaf tea.

My goal for this weekend is to make into the mountains - but first, I need to see if roads are open to non-residents (still recovering from last month's flood), and if the parks are open.  Word on the playground is national parks are closed, due to the government shut down. I'm still checking on state parks.  What are your goals for the weekend? (I also hope to sleep in, at least once!)

Wednesday Greetings

Yesterday escaped me a little bit, so here I am with today's happenings!
Blueberry Muffin Smoothie
Spaghetti, sauce, and Gardein Meatless Meatballs
The apple wasn't in its best shape, so peanut butter accompanied it as well.
Sweet Korma Tofu Bowl with veggies from Bombay Bowl.  I ordered this off menu, as they decided to remove Sweet Korma from the everyday menu.  This place is set up similar to Chipotle; they make the bowl in front of you, asking you what you want in it, as you move down the line.  The guy who attended me tonight said he wasn't sure if it'll stick around or not. Argh!

In between the pb/apple and the Indian food was another intense RideTRX: lots of cardio and full body workout on the TRX straps.  I'm so looking forward to tomorrow's hour of gentle vinyasa!  I'll be back then to report on the day!
