Bring in the New (Food & Year)

I've been busier than expected, and that will actually continue until the weekend (when I have blocked out a lot of time to be home, and actually get some lessons structured for the next week!).  Thus, I have less from own kitchen but definitely different meals than recently!  First, I picked up one of these and had half for lunch Monday and the other half today:

I don't recall them being $4, the rest are always $6. . . I might have to pick up another one!

I was also in the mood for Tomato Coconut Curry Soup

And a Daiya Grilled Cheese to accompany it.

I've had serious popcorn craving. . .it was remedied.

This evening, I headed over to hang out with my brother, he had his pizza and I had mine:

It doesn't look great, but the taste was delicious.  I still want to make my own, but this is a worthy back up.

I plan to continue my quest for "new and tasty" meals this week, so you can expect to see the highlights! I don't know about you, but realizing 2014 is here strikes me as a little overwhelming - more so with the passage of time than anything else.  2013 was a decent year, and I plan to continue the momentum into the coming months! Happy New Year, friends!

Weekend Repeats

A laid back weekend, a little more family and a little time with friends, and mostly repeats on the menu.
 Baked Oatmeal
Indo Noodle Salad from Native Foods
Miso Soup
Broccoli & Spaghetti

My taste buds are bored. I'm going to get creative in the kitchen each day this week, seeing as the following week I'll have to go back to work (which equals quick and predictable).  See you soon!

Non-Edible Christmas

A quick break from the food and exercise posts, here is the holiday captured in photos:
Christmas Dinner at my Aunt & Uncle's apartment.
(I had salad, roasted cauliflower, roasted brussel sprouts, and bread. . .And wine.)

Back at my parents' house: dominoes and Good Earth tea (so good!)
Remy was thoroughly exhausted by it all. . .

Shen asked about my gifts:
Traditional family gifts: calendar, chocolate, socks (not shown).  Sprouts gift card, Starbucks gift card, spice organizer (from my brother - I asked for it), and new sheets (my parents gave them to everyone).  From Grandma in Virginia: 2013 White House ornament. . .
It features Woodrow Wilson, and the oak tree he planted on the grounds.

For lunch today, I'm meeting a friend for Pho (trying it again - hopefully the broth is better), and seeing The Hobbit with my brother.  Grandparents and cousins left this morning, so it's nearly back to normal around here!  See you later this weekend!

Christmas Eve & Such

Whew! Made it through one evening, and only one more big day to go! I think I like the idea of the holidays more than the actual holiday itself.  Behold: my parents' tree. . .
I spent the afternoon and evening there, preparing for Christmas Eve Dinner with extended family and grandparents. We made chili and minestrone (I ate the latter, forgot to take a picture).  Speaking of chili, here was mine from Sunday:

Yesterday morning I met with friends at City O City:
Breakfast Burrito beauty.

Also enjoyed:

While wrapping presents:
Christmas morning should be enjoyable, and I plan on pretending to be pleasant when at my Aunt and Uncle's place in the afternoon/evening.  Ha! And to all a good night. . .

Feeling Like the Holidays

It has been three years since my last Christmas in Colorado. In 2011 we went to Texas. 2012 in Kansas.  My body thanks me already.  I finally did all of my shopping, and it snowed yesterday - it's starting to set in that Winter Break is here, and Christmas is so soon!
A co-worker gifted me this mug on Friday.  This morning I am enjoying it filled with coffee.

As I'm staying in town, I decorated for the holidays: here's my table top tree.
My grandmother in Virginia always sends the White House Christmas Ornament of the Year, and it comes with a little history and a story behind each one.  The Teddy Roosevelt is my favorite.
Roosevelt was known for his conservation efforts, and had banned cutting down a tree and decorating it in the White House (he's also responsible for officially giving the house its name).  His son Archie defied his father's ban by bringing in a tree, and hiding it in a maid's closet.

Speaking of gifts, I've already received one from a friend:
A group of ladies wanted to go see this show, and I wasn't able to get a ticket before that specific date sold out.  She kindly bought two extra tickets, one for me and one for another colleague - so now we're all going! I've heard it's funny, I'll let you know my review next month when we attend!  Also, I keep finding a bazillion candy canes in my work bag...

A little more attention to food, and a little bahumbug: I picked up the Indo Noodle Salad from Native Foods yesterday, and the manager who helped me said: "enjoy it while you can, it's going away on the 31st."
Apparently they are having trouble getting the rice noodles nationwide. I said I'd be happy if they replaced it with something else, as long as it involves peanut sauce.

After YogaCycle today, I am going to make some chili:
I have soy crumbles in the freezer I'll most likely add, as well as a splash of hot sauce.  Final result coming in the next update!

I hope your Sunday is going well, and I'll see you soon!

The Final Sprint

One more day until Winter Break! I haven't done any holiday shopping, as all my attention has been focused on grading and finals.  Our sophomores finished up today, and tomorrow is simply ticking off the "End of Semester To-Do List".  Equally satisfying, it was a half day and I was able to leave early and work from home.

Toasted Everything Bagel with Tofutti

Whole Foods Lunch:
Cranberry Quinoa, Broccoli Slaw, Asian Cabbage Salad

Gentle Vinyasa Yoga - awesome class this afternoon / evening! I can't wait to improve my practice, and achieve the full expression of each pose.

A shot of diluted ACV, and snacked on some pepitas as I prepped dinner.

Not fully in love with the orange sauce it came with, but it was a great experiment otherwise.  If I were to pick it up again, I'd make a homemade peanut sauce and sub it in place for the orange!

Sugar Cookie Tea on the horizon before calling it a night. . .

PB Banana Toast

Asian Chopped Salad with broccoli

Happy Herbivore Meatloaf Bites, baked potato with Better Than Sour Cream and garlic powder.

So, I went in for the last appointment. . .
It was slightly emotional, just knowing that your "friendship" is changing, and we ended the session with an embrace. I wish that I had the capacity to express how much my life has changed, and how she has led me to my better self.  This experience has been a truly transformational time in my journey!

Introspection & Preparation

Whole Foods Salad Bar and Miso Tahini Sauce as dressing:
I only remember to take a dose once a week or so, but it does seem to be doing good things.
Oatmeal with Brown Sugar & Cinnamon, Black Coffee
 Mini Grocery Haul:

This weekend has been one of reflection.  I've been thinking a lot about how I deal with a crisis, my expectations of others and myself, as well as the changes I've made internally (in a variety of areas) the last few years. This Tuesday will be my last session with my therapist.  I considered scaling back appointments, and returning as needed, a while ago. However, at about the same time, she revealed that she was ready for a change, and leaving private practice at the end of this year.  I continued with my twice monthly appointments, and the last few have been focused on my progress, finding closure as I take off the training wheels and speed ahead into the unknown.  I know that I'll be okay, and I know that I will never truly be "finished" working on myself - I just hope to have the grace and strength to continue the work without self-destructing when life seems hopeless, defeating, and lonely.  Arms wide, heart open, eyes looking ahead - here I go. . .

12th Day of the 12th Month

Cinnamon Pumpkin Muffins (the last of the bunch)

Happy Herbivore Meatloaf Bites (with BBQ sauce), steamed kale (seasoned and garnished with Tamari Pepitas) for lunch.
Miso Soup with noodles, wakame, and Sriracha.

I ate the apple only 15 minutes before yoga. My practice was definitely uncomfortable! I must stick to an empty stomach or snack much earlier.  There's a good chance that the evening will end with Coconut Nog & Spiced Rum. . .

Slightly Unsightly

Preparing for today's post, I noticed that this is the least photogenic group of foods I've ever posted. Ha! I'll make it quick and painless (as possible) for your eyes.

Toasted Blueberry Bagel with Tofutti

Roasted Brussel Sprouts & Onion, White Sweet Potato, Miso Tahini Magic Sauce

In celebration of 40 degrees, I wore shorts I took my snack picture outside.
But really, people wore shorts and tank tops to my spin class. And we had the front door of the studio open during our sweat-fest because we were hot. Both in temperature and in shorts.

Meatloaf Bites (Kidney Bean based, and I added BBQ sauce during the last 10 minutes of cooking), adding steamed kale with Old Bay seasoning.
No more ugly food photos, and no more weather reporting for at least the next week. Promise. ;)
