I visited Farmer's Market #1 right when they opened this morning (9:00am), as we have another 100+ degree day on the agenda. I shop here the least often of the three, (even though it is convenient) for these reasons: shade only on the perimeter and it's the most expensive for produce.
Homemade pickles! But, $12 a jar. :(
These are not all of the tents, but I think you get the idea. I spent $15 for two organic tomatoes, two bunches of organic kale, and a bag of local dog treats. As the latter was $6, that means I spent $9 on just a little produce. Am I being cheap, or is that expensive?
Hope you're all having a great Sunday!

i love farmer's markets! so much delicious produce:) those homemade pickles look amazing....the price, not so much!
ReplyDeleteI love Farmer's Markets, too! I should've at least tried one of their samples to see if the pickles are worth the price. . .
DeleteVegetable prices like those are what make people eat at McDonalds. Organic Kale is usually $2.49/pound at the grocery store. I haven't priced Organic Tomatoes, but I wouldn't expect them to be more than $3.00/pound. You'll have to really relish eating them. Let us know if you can tell the difference in quality.
ReplyDeleteRight?! I think it was the tomatoes that did me in, as I believe the kale was two for five dollars. That means four bucks for two tomatoes?! Holy cow! These are the first tomatoes of the season I've tried, and they taste pretty good thus far.
DeleteIt looks like you have so much stuff at your farmer's market! A tortilla stand!?!?!? That's awesome! I have to agree that the produce was really expensive. I feel like I spend way less than that at my farmer's market. I think I spent $20 at mine the first time I went and I got strawberries, mesclun, snap peas, pickles and bok choy. Do they have produce vendors competing with each other with the same produce or everyone sells something different? If they all sell different they can charge whatever they want!
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with Caralyn, those pickles look great but that price is outrageous.
Can't wait to see the other markets you go to! Hope you had a nice weekend!
If you liked this one, wait till you see my favorite! Cheaper produce (for the most part, peaches and pears are super expensive at all markets), lots of crafts - it's really great. This one above is super expensive, which is why I don't go there unless I'm pressed for time (it's easy to get to). There was only one other booth that offered greens and a few root vegetables, but it was pretty small.
DeleteI am determined to find pickles, in a barrel, somewhere!
I agree with Shen; it's pretty sad that crappy food costs so little. Though I guess with all the health problems and medical bills it'll cause them later, it evens out...
ReplyDeleteThe prices are usually pretty high at Farmer's markets, I've found, but I read a lot about farmars and the politics and the farms and so on and they do the world and us a really good service and have really hard jobs. I don't buy the majority of my stuff at Farmars but I want to support them and I think the quality is (usually) worth it. The only place I've seen organic kale is at WF and it's pretty expensive there too - about 3.50 a bunch.
Hope the tomatoes are good.
As one who comes from a farming family, I totally get it - it's really the fault of corporate farms, which can mass produce for cheaper. :( I try to at least buy as much produce as possible from our Farmer's Markets, this week I just didn't need much.
DeleteSo far, the tomatoes are good!
Those homemade pickles look so good! And I was actually looking into making my own, and it was like $6 for just a pack of 4 mini cucumbers for pickling. So maybe that's why the jar was so expensive? I guess it's different everywhere.
ReplyDeleteBut I bet homemade pickles taste so much better. *sigh*
Alright, Isobelle - you're mission to make homemade pickles, then email me the recipe! Ha! I didn't know mini cucumber are so inexpensive - I should try to make some, too.
