Dinner & Conversation

Long day of training, followed by an appointment shortly thereafter, equals dinner from Whole Foods (store #2).  Salad bar (sans dressing), and one tofu spring roll.
Regarding conversation, I mentioned a while ago that I had been considering joining CrossFit.  It seemed to be appealing, as it was an intense, prescribed workout - but cheaper than working out with a trainer.  I took the time to find a couple of gyms, read their mission statements and walk by their facilities.
Once school had ended, I dug deeper into the sport and found that it is very team-oriented (as in, no one can move on to the next activity until the last person finished).  I observed a workout, and saw the annoyance of the more "elite" participants, having to wait for "beginner" to catch up.  Further, ALL of the gyms harp on the "effectiveness" of the Paleo Diet (very carnivore).  Not to mention, the most affordable gym had increased their prices three times in six weeks!
I rationalized all sorts of battle plans: sticking to my vegan-guns, getting over the embarrassment of being the "slow one", it's still cheaper than a trainer.

Then I remembered last summer: for six weeks, I worked out twice a week with my trainer.  Prior to then, and afterwards for a few months, I worked out once a week with her.  Either way, I didn't workout many of the other days, as I was too sore.
(only a sampling of workouts I was given)

I don't want to have my ass handed to me, once or thrice weekly - I want to workout, on my own terms (not holding anyone back), everyday for the rest of my life.  Two mile walks or two hours of sweat in the gym (I have at least two dozen personalized workouts - why pay for more?) and everything in between is possible, on a near daily basis forever.  CrossFit would not be sustainable for me; I would not do more than the bare minimum expected.  I want to be able to try different classes along the way, such as yoga, pilates, Pure Barre, and more.
                             Hahaha this is awesome!
Yup, sounds about right.  ;)   **Totally stole this from Sarah, too funny not to share!**

  1. Haaaahahahaha! That ecard is PERFECT for this post. It makes me laugh SO MUCH. :)

I totally understand what you mean about Crossfit. My sister in law is doing it now and seems pretty miserable about it. I agree, you already spent the money on the trainer and have all of those workouts, you'll benefit greatly from that. PLUS, you can always increase the weight and intensity as you improve. I love that you want to do a variety of classes. It keeps your muscles guessing and you'll be a well rounded athlete because of it :) I think you'd like the Tone It Up and Blogilates workouts. They are free on youtube and are a great/quick workout!

You are so right about doing something that you can maintain for the rest of your life. That is so important and it is so important to love the exercise that you do. I think you made a great decision and I would love to see the workouts you do!

Yummy looking salad and spring roll! :) You are doing great with the June Salad Challenge!! Have a great night!

    1. I know! It was too perfect not to use it!

It was a decision that had to be made, and it came so naturally - so I know it was the right one. You're absolutely right, exercise must be enjoyable! I'm definitely a TIU follower, but will have to check out Blogilates! Thanks for your support :)

I'm hoping the salad challenge becomes part of my everyday life!

Also, I have a busy weekend - so I might fall behind on posts, but will catch up on Monday!

    1. WF is great for a fresh, constantly changing variety of options! CrossFit is definitely a lifestyle, but I enjoy running and other activities too much to give them up.

  3. Thanks for sharing this. I am intrigued by crossfit but it sounds like it wouldn't be for me either. That paleo shit....is it just me, or does it seem like it all of a sudden came out of nowhere?!?

BTW, I have a hard time reading the spam-blocker words. DOes this mean I'm a robot?!?

    1. I think Paleo was around a few years ago, but it sounds like a re-make of the Atkins diet. Thus, none of its principle align with my beliefs!

The spam blocker codes are definitely getting more difficult! Ha!

  4. The Salad and Spring Rolls look good. Glad you didn't join CrossFit if it wasn't a 'Fit' for you, although I've no clue what it is. Sounds like I don't want to know.

  5. And Stacy is totally right about Spam Blocker. I just had to get past a picture of a head of lettuce to enter my comment.

  6. Hey Ingrid, I've just been catching up on your blog. You've been eating some delicious looking, healthy food - yum!

Your mention of "(seeing) the annoyance of the more "elite" participants, having to wait for "beginner" to catch up" is just the kind of attitude that turns me off. Fortunately there are plenty of ways to work out and plenty of people who work out (maybe even some Cross Fitters) who don't have that attitude and thank god for that. My brother is a big fan of endurance sports, and when I told him about finishing dead last in a 5K at work, his response was congratulatory. He said he thinks of races as a personal accomplishment and that I should think about all the people who didn't even do the race.

OK, well you've obviously hit a nerve with me, but one final thing I want to say is that I really admire your accomplishments and would be interested in hearing more about how you're working out (especially Pure Barre; that sounds cool). Happy weekend!

    1. Hi Rachel! I love the idea of team sport, when it is supportive and confidence building - CrossFit is not. Perhaps if you are at the same level, physically, then it would be great? I'm super excited about taking different classes. A friend is insisting I drop in to a Zumba class soon, so I'll probably check it out - even if I look like an idiot! Ha ha!

I completely agree with your brother's advice; so true that it is a personal journey. I'm sure we are all harder on ourselves, more so than anyone else. :)

  7. Hi Ingrid!
That's interesting about Crossfit! I've always heard about it but was never really interested because I'm not that "hard core" with my workouts. That attitude would turn me off as well. I think you'll enjoy the variety of different classes better anyway, and it's good for your body to cross-train.

Are you on FB? I'd love to connect with you there! Can you email me your info so we can find each other (you can email me at the contact email on my blog page).

    Talk to you soon!
    :)Christine
