Sleepy, Sneezy, Snotty

The three virus-horsemen Sleepy, Sneezy, and Snotty first arrived on Monday.  They convinced me to take a sick day today.  As a whole, I'm fine - just a little red nosed.  I spent the day resting and doing a few things around the house.

In addition to lots of water, here's what I had (as enjoyed with a 50% functioning olfactory system):
Lightly toasted onion bagel, cream cheese, cucumbers (apparently I'm willing to eat this at any time of day!)
Early afternoon, I took Remy to the dog park and stopped at Whole Foods.  The hot bar was looking a little dismal, with the exception of Cuban Black Beans - in the 4 oz container on top.  Middle tier: grilled coconut kale, bottom tier: black bean quinoa salad.
Lunch all laid out (a little Cholula added to the Cuban Black Beans - clear out the sinuses, please!):
Dinner: kombu broth, wide rice noodles, wakame, white miso, scallions, green onion, sriracha.
Ready to tackle the last two days of the week!

  1. Yeah, some people seem to be able to grab great stuff consistently from the hot bar - I can never find anything that appeals to me. The coconut kale sounds awesome, though! Was it just made with coconut oil or something?
Feel better - only two more days to go.

    1. There were two other items - mirin cucumber salad and some kind of overcooked kale / mushroom concoction. The coconut kale was made with coconut milk, a bunch of spices, with large shreds of actual coconut.

Thank you! Down to one more day :)

  2. Yikes, I'm so sorry your aren't feeling well! I'm glad that you were able to stay home and try and rest and get better.

Your meals look amazing!! I'm totally intrigued by the coconut kale! Please elaborate! I feel like I could totally get behind that! The dinner soup looks absolutely perfect for a sick day. I hope that it warmed you up and was comforting. Feel better soon!!

    1. Yesterday was definitely the worst of it - I'm glad I stayed home! Thank you so much :)

The kale definitely had the grilled / charred flavor most predominately, followed by the spice / coconut flavors. I would probably buy it again, seeing as I don't have a grill! The soup was fantastic - I'm hooked.

  3. Oh, I hear ya. I've been struggling the past few days with a cold. Still tired but starting to feel better. Looks like some delicious food, especially that last soup, to feed your sickness. Hope you feel better today.

    1. Darn those germs! I hope you're feeling better soon. Miso has such fabulous healing qualities! I'm definitely on the mend, thank you :)

  4. Still can't get over the different grub your WF's has from mine. Even the fonts on the labels are weird. I don't see how the proximity to Mexico factors into Cuban Black Beans or Coconut Kale, but I'll take your word for it.

Anyways, sorry you're sick. Hope you pass those germs right back to the gnarly pubescents.

    1. Ha! while two states north of the border does indeed equal great Mexican food, the Cuban Black Beans were clearly a fluke (I think my version actually tastes better).

Including the Vegan Van, I plan photographing inside my nearest Whole Foods. Then we'll really compare notes!

I know! How dare they breathe their germs on me. Ha ha!

  5. Sleepy, Sneezy, and Snotty sound like two of the seven dwarves and their less popular cousin. I hope you're feeing better now. I imagine this is the end of the cold season (both weather and virus) so there's that.

Add me to the coconut kale train; that stuff sounds great, and I can't think of a better dinner than soup when you're not feeling your best. As Monday's miso soup did, this one looks delicious too.

    1. I couldn't decide between the Seven Dwarves or the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, but the names do lend themselves towards fairytales rather than the end of the world! Ha!

Miso soup is the new pink in this house. Or black. Or whatever color is super trendy right now. :)
