Work Out Run Down (Double)

Outside - I ran two miles, one of which was against the wind.  Not my best time, but I'm happy I did it.

Gym:  After I clean the house right now, I'm heading to the gym.  Here's what is on the agenda:

4 Rounds of 25 reps each
      - assisted pull ups
      - shoulder press with 8 lb dumbell
      - tricep dips
      - bicep curls with 8 lb dumbell
      - pushups on bosu
      - ab crunches on floor

Coming up tomorrow: weekly timed one miler and clean eating goals

Vegan Recipes, Favorite Cookbooks

My original intention with today's blog was try to out a new recipe, and review it.  However, midday Sunday I felt the beginnings of a head cold - and it's been downhill ever since.  I can't breathe through my nose, which causes me to lose my sense of smell - and since taste is based largely on one's sense of smell. . . everything tastes like cardboard.  That said, I'll have to review a new recipe at a later date.

In regards to vegan recipes in general, I find there is a huge learning curve, and I've had to restock my kitchen.  Especially with the information from The Kind Diet  by Alicia Silverstone, who emphasizes macrobiotics in addition to veganism.  I will say this:  when I stuck to a strict vegan diet, with some macrobiotics, I felt great.  Thereafter, I hit a "cooking" wall, and didn't know what to prepare.  I started to lean on prepackaged vegan foods (i.e. Amy's Dairy-Free Organic frozen foods and canned items, Annie Chun's vegan noodle bowls ), for nearly two out of three meals.

This leads me to cookbooks.  I have purchased several vegan cookbooks, and am slowly working my way through them.  So far, I've tried recipes from The Kind Diet (also visit the website for more recipes), specifically the Kabocha Squash soup and Sicilian Collard Greens being my favorite.  From Clean Food by Terry Walters, I've had numerous items, and have yet to be disappointed (Grilled Polenta with Mushroom Ragout - wow!).  Also equally amazing is the Skinny Bitch Ultimate Everday Cookbook by Kim Barnouin.  It's written with the same humor as the other books (which I've also read), but this cookbook features tons of photos, and every recipe has been fantastic.  So far I've had the Kale with Peanut Dipping Sauce, and Wild Rice Pilaf with Currants and Pine Nuts a few times.

I have three other cookbooks I've yet to try, but intend to do so soon (provided my olfactory system returns to proper working order). 

Last thing I'll mention is that I've also perused the suggested internet sites provided in Kathy Freston's Veganist, with this one being my favorite (I used their suggestions for a tofu scramble this past weekend).

Work Out Run-Down (Gym)

This is today's workout via my trainer, it's called a Murphy.

- Run one mile as fast as possible (my treadmill pace was 13:38)
- 20 rounds of each
      5 push-ups
      10 sit-ups / crunches (I alternated)
      15 air squats
- Run one mile

It should be noted that I did not run the final mile.  My legs were feeling weak, so instead I did incline walking for a half mile (stopped because I was at my hour time limit).  I want to feel disappointed, but that first mile was the fastest I've done in a really long time.  Also, I just did 300 squats! So, I hope to do better on the Murphy next time.

Work Out Run-Down (Outdoors)

This workout was done outside, low 50's temperature-wise.  I used to set out a course, and wore my Garmin running watch.

Warm up: half mile walk

Workout: 2 mile run

Cool down: half mile walk

From top to bottom: 2.0 miles, 28:57 total time, average pace 14:02.

As previously mentioned, when I'm working on increasing my miles, I'm less concerned with the pace.  The USB cable that comes with my watch is currently not "reading" well when plugged into my computer.  This means that I can't get my mile splits, but I feel like the second mile was faster.

On another note, I won't be able to do my fast one miler for time today, so it'll have to resume next week!
